Bansko is currently the premier ski and snowboard destination in Bulgaria and in Eastern Europe. It’s a small town, with a historic quarter, located at the base of the majestic Pirin Mountain, 160 km away from Sofia (about 2 hour drive). Recent multimillion Euro investments in facilities and infrastructure have put Bansko on the map as a major, world class ski resort, and the town was a host to men’s and women’s World Cup Finals. A modern Gondola lift takes you up to the mountain to 17 slopes, over 70 km long, with extremely challenging runs or ones ideal for beginners. At the end of the day, the he 7 km long gentle ski - road will lead you down to the parking lot, where most hotel have shuttles to/from.

The massive investments in the sport facilities have naturally boosted the development of new luxury hotels and holiday apartments. Yet the “Old Town” of Bansko preserves its historic character and charm and there are multiple museums and landmarks in the town of national significance. Traditional restaurants, called mahanas, are plenty in the Old Town and serve local culinary specialties as well as the customary Bulgarian cuisine. The place is a favorite among tourists and locals, and the town literally bursts with visitors around major holidays and peak season.

Day 5

Locations: Basnko

On the way to/back from Basnko, we suggest a visit to the spectacular Rila Monastery, a unique symbol of Bulgaria.
Originally founded in the 10th century, it was destroyed by the Ottomans in the 15th century, only to undergo a major reconstruction in the 19th century during which the residential complex and the Virgin Mary Temple were built. Surrounded by 20 m-high stone walls, the monastery also includes the monastery courtyard, Hrelyo’s Tower, the museum and the farming buildings. There are around 300 rooms in the monastery, 100 of which are monastic cells.
