Established back in the 19th century and known as Chamkoria (Pine Forest), it was destination for the noble. But it is during the 1970s that the resort transformed into what it is today- large hotels and modern sport facilities. There are plenty of ski/snowboard slopes (among century old pine woods)- 24 trails with a total length of over 58 km. In addition, the resort has cross-country skiing tracks that are over 35km long, biathlon, night skiing facilities and more. Borovets was twice a host to World Cup Alpine Skiing rounds and is a popular destination for many British tourists.

Day 4
Locations: BorovetsIn Borovets is located Tsarska Bistritsa- the winter royal palace of the Bulgarian Royal family. Built between in the 19th century, it served as the hunting lodge of Tsar Ferdinand of Bulgaria and his son Boris III. When Bulgaria became a communist state in 1945, the palace was nationalized, but the democratic changes in the 1990s led to the return of the palace to Simeon II, the last monarch of Bulgaria. The only church in Borovets is the small wooden structure of the Holy Transfiguration Church, where King Simeon married his daughter Princess Kalina.

Locations: BorovetsIf you would like to take a little break from skiing, you may consider a day trip to Rila Monastery.
100km away, an hour and a half drive, from Borovets is the most famous and grand monastery- St Ivan of Rila, a unique symbol of Bulgaria. Originally founded in the 10th century, it was destroyed by the Ottomans in the 15th century, only to undergo a major reconstruction in the 19th century during which the residential complex and the Virgin Mary Temple were built. Surrounded by 20 m-high stone walls, the monastery also includes the monastery courtyard, Hrelyo’s Tower, the museum and the farming buildings. There are around 300 rooms in the monastery, 100 of which are monastic cells.
