Rila, the most majestic Bulgarian mountain, features the highest peak on the Balkan Peninsula, Mussala, at 2,925 m. Embraced by Rila are 219 high-mountain, ice-cold lakes, over 2,000 plant varieties and rich animal world. It is also the natural setting for Bulgaria's most famous and remarkable monastery - Rila Monastery, and the country's oldest winter resort – Borovets.

Borovets is actually fantastic year round and an ideal base for tackling Mussala, other nearby summits or the famous Seven Rila Lakes, located at an altitude of 2,095 m to 2,535 m.

Day 1

Locations: Sofia Borovets (65km, 1H)

After a pleasant drive around the Iskur Damp, arrive at Borovets, the oldest and the biggest mountain resort in Bulgaria and is just 65km from Sofia (about an hour drive). Established back in the 19th century and known as Chamkoria (Pine Forest), it was the destitution for noble.  But it is during the 1970s that the resort transformed into what it is today- large hotels and modern sport facilities.

Day 2

Locations: Borovets

Leisure day for your favorite activities.

Horseback riding will take you through the beautiful woods to small little meadows, surrounded by hundred year old pines.

If you a hike lover, then welcome to hike heaven. For those who like the easy stroll, there are plenty eco paths and pleasant short treks to take, either around the hotel zone or at the top of the mountain, after a short ride with the gondola. For those who enjoy the serious hike, then the Mussala Peak hikes should be on the list.

For the bike enthusiasts, there are easy bike routes, perfect for families, as well as serious and strenuous mountain climb bike routes (some of the ski chairs have special hooks for bikes).

In Borovets is also located Tsarska Bistritsa- the winter royal palace of the Bulgarian Royal family. Built between in the 19th century, it served as the hunting lodge of Tsar Ferdinand of Bulgaria and his son Boris III. When Bulgaria became a communist state in 1945, the palace was nationalized, but the democratic changes in the 1990s led to the return of the palace to Simeon II, the last monarch of Bulgaria. The only church in Borovets is the small wooden structure of the Holy Transfiguration Church, where King Simeon married his daughter Princess Kalina.

Day 3

Locations: Day 3 Borovets Rila Monastery (100km, 1H30min) Sofia (125km, 1H30min)

Depart for the most famous and grand monastery- St Ivan of Rila, a symbol of Bulgaria. Surrounded by 20 m-high stone walls, the monastery includes the monastery courtyard, the Birth of the Virgin Mary Temple, Hrelyo’s Tower, the museum and the residential and the farming buildings. There are around 300 rooms in the monastery, 100 of which are monastic cells.
