Rhodope Folklore Events: End of July and Early August
5 days | Folklore 0 Comments | Write a commentThe Rhodope region has preserved its distinctive creativity that shines not only in the sound of the bagpipes, but also in the poetic songs that have always been a support and inspiration to people throughout the ages. In the summer, the Rhodopes Mountains are a host to several folklore and music events, which seem to attract more and more international visitors and participants each year.
Etno- Jazz festival, combining contemporary and ethnic music sounds, is in the last weekend of July (Jul 27th –Jul 30th). The culmination of the festival, happening on top of the mountain at Mt. Perelik, is a real feast for the soul and the senses.
The most popular summer event, however, is the Bagpipe Music Competition, the first weekend of August (Aug 3rd-Aug 5th), near the village of Gela. It is a spectacular event to see and experience, and literally hundreds of people flock to the beautiful Rhodopes Mountains.

We highly recommend to combine the musical experience with a mountain vacation in the Rhodopes (please see our suggested itinerary in the Mountain Vacation category), as there is plenty to do and explore or simply relax and soak the beautiful scenery.
Day 4
Locations: Rhodopes MountainVisit to the town- museum of Shiroka Laka, a folkloric center of the region, famous for its beautiful Rhodope style architecture. In fact, the prestigious National School of Folklore Arts is located in Shiroka Laka, attracting cstudents from all over the country.
Day 5
Locations: Rhodopes → Sofia (230 km, 3Hrs)Day 4 or Day 10- let us know when you are ready to leave.

Transfer to the heart of the Rhodopes.
Lodging can be at the spa-hotels of Pamporovo or in boutique or family hotels in the near by villages of the Smolyan region (Gela, Progled, Momchilovtsi) or small towns (Shiroka Laka, Chepelare).
