Zheravna: Festival of the Folklore Costume (3rd weekend of August)
4 days | Folklore 0 Comments | Write a commentZheravna is a small village, nestled in the Eastern Stara Planina, 330km from Sofia and 110 km from Burgas. Zheravna is yet another town-museum, preserving its original architecture. The houses in the village are about five hundred houses or so, 172 of which are declared monuments of culture. They are in the traditional style, which for this part of the country, is mainly with wood décor.
The Festival of the Folkore Costume invites you to take a lunge back in time and be part of a very unique experience. All participants must wear folklore costume (different nationality folklore costumes are acceptable as well), and if you don’t have one- you either have to buy or rent one before you get in. Every aspect of the festival is intended to re-create customs and traditions from last centuries. You will see nestinari (a ritual involving dancing on smoldering embers), traditional Bulgarian wedding and much, much more.
The accommodations in Zheravna, and in the near by village of Kotel (another town-museum), are restored guesthouses, offering rooms representing the typical atmosphere of the period. The Festival organizers also set up a camp site, which is free of charge.

Day 3

- The house-museum of the legendary Bulgarian writer Yordan Yovkov. Besides exhibiting personal items and showcasing the work of the writer, the house also shows typical furniture, household utilities and items.
- The building of the school, proudly standing since 1867, features more than 450 paintings of Bulgarian and foreign artists and also host traveling exhibits.

The program of the festival is quite rich, with dancing, singing and musical performances, by amateur and professional ensembles and is happening at different corners of the park.
